If you work from home in Brookline – or anywhere – you know how difficult it can be to strike a balance between business and relaxation. You can do it, though, by making a few simple upgrades to your home. Read on to learn how to blend work with relaxation and love your home even more.

Renew Your Home Office

Begin with your home office since you spend so much time there. Do some reorganizing first, cleaning up your desk, sorting through your files, and bringing in some shelving to store supplies. If you have the space, incorporate a small sitting area or a table and chairs for an expanded work area. Apply a fresh coat of paint for a splash of color, and hang new window treatments and coverings. Add a few fun decorations and plants for interest, and then enjoy your renewed space.

Declutter Your Spaces

Next, give your entire house a declutter treatment. Sometimes your possessions can become overwhelming, so sort through them, get rid of some, and put the rest away neatly. Go room by room, and be honest with yourself about what you really need and use. Make three piles — one for items to keep, one for items to pass on, and one for questionable items. Send the items to pass on to a local charity. Purchase some storage bins, boxes, and baskets for the items you want to keep, and then see how much room you have left for the questionable items. Your home will be much more organized and relaxing when you’ve finished.

Improve Lighting

Also, consider improving lighting in your home. Incorporate as much natural lighting as possible, but also think about installing some pendant lights throughout the house. If you have high ceilings, these can brighten up your space considerably. Pendant lights are also ideal for smaller spaces, such as over the dining room table or the kitchen island. You can choose from a wide variety of styles and materials, so conduct research to find the best options for your unique space.

Set Up a Wellness Area

You might want to set aside a particular space in your home as a designated wellness area where you can meditate, read, exercise, listen to music, or work on hobbies. Include some comfortable chairs, a good light, a table for projects, and some shelves for storage, but leave an open floor space as well. This room can become a retreat for you, so make sure it reflects your tastes and needs.

Create a Backyard Oasis

Finally, don’t neglect your outdoor areas. Freshen up your patio with new seating and perhaps a fire pit where your family can gather to tell stories and toast marshmallows. If you enjoy outdoor cooking, consider installing an outdoor kitchen with a top-of-the-line grill, a durable range hood, a sink, and even a small refrigerator. You’ll love entertaining in your new backyard oasis. If you’re feeling ambitious, plant a garden with flowers and vegetables, too.

Enjoy Work and Relaxation

By following some of these tips, you can turn your home into a place where you can work and easily relax. So make a few upgrades, and enjoy your home all the more. For help with your real estate needs in the Brookline area, visit realtor Christine McCarron’s website.
